the Heȟáka Tracks Cuff
the Heȟáka Tracks Cuff
The Lakota people are the rightful land stewards of the Black Hills (He Sapa or Paha Sapa), the place I call home. When I was making these new pieces as an offering to the majestic elk, I got to wondering what the Lakota name for elk was, and it is heȟáka, so that’s where these pieces got their name from. In Lakota culture the elk is thought of as a relative who is symbolic of strength, endurance, and patience.
How to measure your wrist size: Using a soft tape measure (or a piece of string that you can measure on a ruler or tape measure), measure around the wrist you will wear the cuff on. Measure right against the skin. The tape measure or string should not be loose or tight, just gently against the skin. Be sure to include the small bump of your ulna on the outside of your wrist in your measurement. This is the wrist size you will leave in the notes and I will make your cuff according to this size.
*** Brass will naturally tarnish with regular wear, developing a beautiful patina over time. Sterling silver does the opposite, the more you wear it the less it will tarnish, or need polished. Regular wear will keep the silver on your new cuff looking bright and shiny, while the brass darkens, and a unique contrast takes shape between the two metals.
+ Heavy gauge brass cuff bracelet with hand stamped elk tracks
+ Reclaimed sterling silver overlay inside the cuff band with the words STRENGTH ENDURANCE PATIENCE hand stamped into it
+ 6” cuff with 1 ¼” opening
+ Best fits wrist size 6 ¾”-7 ¼”
+ 11/16” wide cuff band
+ Cuff can be sized up or down slightly with a very gentle initial squeeze to make the opening smaller, or a very gently pull to make the opening slightly larger. After this initial adjustment DO NOT squeeze the opening shut and pull it open repeatedly. You will weaken the metal and risk it breaking.
